Homemade Dog Treats | March 2014

These survived the test...I placed a Homemade Dog Treat in one hand and a store bought in the other and let each of our dogs choose. Sasha, Lucy & Desi all chose the homemade treats, which I already knew. ;-)

Baking temp: 300˚
Baking time: 45 minutes, then turn off the oven and leave overnight to harden

Ingredients:

3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup milk powder
1 tablespoon dry yeast
3 1/2 cups lukewarm (90 - 110˚) chicken or beef broth
1 egg beaten with 2 tablespoons water (this is your egg wash)

1. Grease cookie sheets or use parchment paper.

2. Mix all dry ingredients.

3. Dissolve yeast in broth and let set 10 minutes.

4. Stir into dry ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms. Adjust water or flour as necessary so that you can roll to a 1/4" thickness. I found this very easy to work with and roll.

5. Divide dough into thirds and roll. Cut into desired shapes or use a pizza cutter to just make squares. Reroll any scraps.

6. Brush with egg wash and bake on cookie sheets at 300˚ for 45 minutes. Turn off and leave overnight to finish hardening.

Enjoy!
